Welcome to Our Biotech Academy!

Established in 1997, the Biotechnology program is a science-based academy that allows students to develop their interests in the world of science and cultivate what scientific aspirations they hold and hope to achieve. Sheldon High School's Biotech Academy prepares and informs students of the post-secondary school and career options in the ever-growing realm of biological sciences. Throughout their high school career, Biotech students go through four main courses tailored to assist them in expanding their knowledge: The Technology of Biology, The Science and Ethics of Biotechnology, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology. Students are exposed to and have direct contact with various local and regional industries as well as get rare hands on experiences. The Biotechnology program is an influential and powerful source of students who are interested in the ongoing world of science.

Our Mission & Values

Biotech Academy is about helping students learn more about who they are - in science, leadership, or in their communities. Our mission is to make science appealing and fun, biotechnology education available, and how science can have the potential to become life changing. We believe that all of our students should have the opportunity to grow in a supportive environment, challenge and find areas of improvement in their strengths, and develop real-world skills.

We value creating a safe haven for our students, allowing them to be themselves and comfortable enough to take on obstacles, ask questions, and make mistakes. We wish our program aligns with your career goals and helps  point you in the right direction. Through all the leadership opportunities and collaboration efforts, we continue to empower students to develop confidence, resilience, and work with purpose.

Map Your Future

Map your future is an event created to expose young students to possible career options. Our Biotech Academy officers every year and at this portion, we are showing the kids how to extract DNA from strawberries.

A Cure for Disease

The Biotech Academy collaborated with Students Give Hope in hopes of creating a new enzyme that could be a potential cure for cancer.

Our Students

Students in Biotech come from all different cultures and backgrounds. The barriers of religion and ethnicity are eliminated when all students can come together and bond over the amazing world of science and discovery. Sheldon High School is one of the most diverse schools in the nation, and our academy reflects that. We hope to inspire up-and-coming scientists at an early age to never give up and to continually pursue their dreams.

Student Leadership & Involvement

Leadership at Biotech Academy is about leading by example, not just for titles. It's not about being perfect, but it's about building confidence, problem solving, and taking risks along the way. Students are encouraged to take a step outside of their comfort zones, take ownership of conducting research, and support team members in creating something influential. We believe that trusting students to take the lead promotes growth in the long run.

Each year, we recruit a Biotech Board consisting of passionate 10th-12th graders who represent our programs, plan events, and increase outreach. With the guidance of 4 diligent advisors, these student leaders take an active role in shaping the Biotech Community and get the glimpse of being in a work environment.

These students take on leadership roles such as President, Senior Vice President, Vice President, Secretaries, Treasurers, Public Relations, and Social Chair Officers. Every position contributes in ensuring our academy runs smoothly and creatively!

From Bingo Nights, Scavenger Hunts, Gingerbread house decorating, and themed gatherings, we do our best to ensure the Biotech Community has something to help you recharge and reconnect.

Whether you're looking to build new connections, study together, or just take a well-earned break, our events are open to all students and full of the good vibes you've been looking for!
